THERE are just a few days left to become part of the Copeland Big Switch - possibly making huge savings on energy bills.

Ten per cent of Copeland residents are in fuel poverty, so Copeland Borough Council is keen to help by offering this group buying scheme. It brings residents together to exert collective buying power, getting the best deal from the energy companies.

Roaring success for Whitehaven Market

A BIRTHDAY BONANZA saw people from all corners of the county visit Whitehaven Market on the first anniversary of its relaunch.

Free goody bags were on offer at Saturday’s (September 30) event as well as a range of new stalls and entertainment.

Whitehaven Market takes place every Thursday and Saturday and has been an increasing success since its relaunch in October 2016.

The number of regular stallholders has doubled over the past year and income for the market has increased by over 35 per cent.

Statement on Councillor Michael Guest

Michael Guest, a Copeland Borough Councillor and Whitehaven Town Councillor, was invited to a meeting with Copeland Borough Council to discuss a statement made on social media that contained serious allegations.

In the Facebook post dated July 14, Councillor Guest claimed: “Corruption in Copeland is endemic… politics in Copeland is about corruption and self-interest.”

Whitehaven Market’s Big Birthday Bash

A special ‘Big Birthday Bash’ themed market will take place this Saturday, (September 30) featuring a selection of new stalls, entertainment and free goody bags, to mark the first anniversary of the market relaunch.

Whitehaven Market takes place every Thursday and Saturday and has been an increasing success since its relaunch in October 2016.

Sir Tony Robinson celebrates launch event

TELEVISION legend Sir Tony Robinson brought history to life as The Beacon Museum’s guest of honour.

Sir Tony met fans, signed autographs and delivered two fascinating talks during his Saturday afternoon visit to the Whitehaven harbourside attraction.

The star of classic sitcom Blackadder and presenter of the popular Time Team archaeological series said he was “delighted” to be invited by The Beacon to formally open its new £1.2 million conference facility, The Beacon Portal, and to cut the ribbon at its new feature exhibition, Gladiators: A Cemetery of Secrets.

Mayor cuts ribbon at community transport scheme

COPELAND Mayor Mike Starkie has cut the ribbon to mark the delivery of two new minibuses for the Muncaster Microbus scheme.

The new Mercedes buses were funded by the Department of Transport to help meet the needs for the community bus service in West Cumbria. The Muncaster Microbus serves residents of Bootle, Ravenglass, Waberthwaite, Eskdale, Seascale, Gosforth and Wasdale and runs a twice-weekly Whitehaven Wanderer service to the town, as well as other destinations, regular excursions and theatre trips. 

Council's former Chairman makes donation

A SIZEABLE donation has been made to a local charity following a year of fundraising from Copeland Council's former Chairman.

Peter Tyson presented a cheque for £3,170 to Hospice at Home West Cumbria on Tuesday; the proceeds from his fundraising activities during his term as Chairman which ended in May.

Coun Tyson said he was "proud" to have raised such a significant amount, adding: “It is a charity that’s very close to my heart”.

Carol Robertson, from Hospice’s fundraising team, received the donation from Coun Tyson at Tuesday’s Full Council meeting.

Windy walks around Whitehaven

OVER 50 people attended a series of free guided walks around the historic Whitehaven Marina last weekend, led by The Beacon Museum, Whitehaven in celebration of Heritage Open Days.

Heritage Open Days is England's largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,500 organisations, 5,000 events and 40,000 volunteers across the nation.

Winter is coming

As summer ends and the temperature drops, Copeland Council is helping residents keep warm and save money on their energy bills.

The authority’s successful group buying scheme – the Copeland Big Switch – has so far saved some people hundreds of pounds, with most people who enquire being offered savings of some degree.
