Dog owners fined for allowing pets to foul

TWO dog owners have been fined for not cleaning up after their pets.
Copeland Council issued £80 fixed penalty notices to the individuals, who left the mess behind at South View Road in Bransty and Parton beach car park.
Coun Mark Holliday, Copeland's portfolio holder for customers and communities, said: "Most dog owners do the right thing and clean up after their animals. But when people don't, we will always take action if possible. This is unacceptable behaviour that makes our communities unpleasant for our neighbours.”
Council honours aldermen and appoints new chairman

COPELAND Council has honoured two respected ex councillors at today's Annual Meeting.
John Jackson and Lena Hogg were voted in unanimously Aldermen of the Borough, an honorary title awarded to councillors for their service.
David Moore, in proposing Mr Jackson, said: “He was a valued member of this council for many years and always proved his worth.
“He always spoke up, worked hard and was proud of his community.
Spring spruce-up for Whitehaven care home

MEMBERS of the Copeland community banded together on Friday (April 27) to spruce up the grounds of Brackenthwaite care home.
The tidy-up organised by the Copeland Hub and pupils of the Future Pathways programme, saw the grounds transformed into a colourful oasis.
Representatives from Copeland Borough Council, Morgan Sindall, Home Group and Cumbria Constabulary, rolled up their sleeves alongside pupils from Energy Coast UTC and St James C of E Junior school.
The group gathered together to pick litter, plant flowers, garden, bake cakes and repaint benches.
Garden waste contamination in Egremont

AN ENTIRE load of garden waste was almost dumped after householders filled their bin with rubbish including a full-length rubber hosepipe.
Copeland Council's garden waste is processed by local firm West Coast Composting (WCC), but this load was almost not accepted because it was so contaminated. WCC staff had to sort through the grass and clippings to remove household waste including the hosepipe.
The load was collected in Egremont.
Whitehaven’s rich history to be enjoyed by all

WHITEHAVEN’S rich history is being celebrated through the introduction of two information boards in the town’s James Street area.
The boards feature a wealth of local knowledge describing the town’s former YMCA building and surrounding area, right back until the 17th century.
One of the boards explores the Pow Beck and how it was possible to navigate a boat through Whitehaven’s Market Place, it was crossed by a series of bridges before being covered in 1764.
Recycling scheme off to great start

Copeland's new kerbside recycling scheme collected more than DOUBLE the previous average amount in its first week.
Mayor Mike Starkie said: "The response to the scheme has been amazing - as we expected, Copeland people are very keen to recycle and we've tried to make it as easy as possible."
Crews collected 62 tonnes of glass, cans, plastic, card and paper in the first week.

INDUSTRY leaders from a wide range of sectors came together on Thursday (April 19) to declare Copeland Open for Business.
Figureheads from the nuclear, health, tourism, and mining industries gathered together alongside government representatives at Mike Starkie, Copeland Mayor’s second Open for Business Conference, to discuss the borough’s bright future.
The invitation only event seen 300 delegates gather to hear guest speakers including Richard Harrington MP, Energy Minister, Lord Matthew Taylor, Housing Specialist and Trudy Harrison, MP.
