Tree vandalised in Whitehaven

Published: 30/01/2018

A TREE has been vandalised only two days after it was planted in Whitehaven.

Copeland Council planted the malus – a ornamental apple tree – in the Sandhills Court car park, off Queen Street in the town centre, and will now be forced to re-plant the tree following the damage. A protective belt was deliberately cut and the trunk uprooted and snapped.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “It’s incredibly disappointing that this has happened. Why anyone would feel the need to damage a tree that has been planted for the public’s enjoyment is completely beyond me.

Successful community project looking to expand

A SUCCESSFUL community project is hoping to expand its reach throughout Copeland.

Men in Sheds, which originated on the Mirehouse estate in Whitehaven, offers the chance for men to gather in a larger version of a typical garden shed, where they share tools and resources to work on projects in a safe and inclusive environment.

The Copeland Hub, which supports the project, now aims to roll it out to the rest of the borough through the introduction of a Copeland Shed Network.

As part of this, residents were asked to complete a survey to share their views on Copeland and the issues that blight the borough such as fly-tipping, littering and dog-fouling.

COPELAND’S Mayor is proposing to limit the council tax increase for residents among his spending plans for the forthcoming year.

Mike Starkie’s proposed budget includes a 1.95 per cent increase on a household’s council tax bill - lower than the three per cent the council is able to impose in line with inflation – and a freeze on car parking charges.

Residents urged to sign up to money-saving scheme

COPELAND Council is marking Big Energy Saving Week by urging people to sign up to its money-saving scheme.

The Copeland Big Switch is currently open for applications following three successful campaigns earlier this year, in which a high number of householders saved large amounts on their energy bills.

The scheme, run by Copeland Council in partnership with iChoosr, involves the organisers creating a large group of customers interested in cheaper tariffs, who then offer their custom as a group to the energy firm offering the best deal.

The new collections will take paper, metal, glass, card and plastic in one vehicle. Residents will be given three new plastic boxes for metal, glass and plastics, plus a weighted bag for card.
