Copeland Big Switch could boost economy

COPELAND residents are being offered an average saving of £148 through the borough's latest energy buying scheme - and research shows these savings will go back into the local economy.
The second round of the Copeland Big Switch has just closed and research reveals 63 per cent of energy switchers say they would spend the savings locally.
Copeland Council has been offering residents a collective energy switching scheme for around six months. It uses group buying power to get the best price from energy suppliers who compete for the business.
Mayor opens memorial garden

A VILLAGE'S new memorial beach garden has marked its official opening.
Mike Starkie, mayor of Copeland, attended the ribbon-cutting at the garden in Parton, created to remember villagers Frank Taggarty, Wendy Morton and Barbara Peel.
The garden was created in a joint project between Parton Parish Council and NuGen's Green Grants scheme. Joining Mr Starkie at the opening were Kevin Young, chair of the parish council, and Paula Madill, NuGen's head of environment.
Busy year for council's enforcement team

ENFORCEMENT officers at Copeland Council dealt with 900 call-outs over the past 12 months, new figures reveal.
Of the total incidents that were investigated by council officers, there were 321 reports of fly-tipping, 85 calls about dog barking problems and 110 allegations of anti-social behaviour.
The team also dealt with 100 reports of stray dogs in the borough, of which 48 were collected and looked after by the council’s kennelling service.
Council highlights penalties for building offences

COPELAND Council has highlighted to builders that they can face a large fine if they fail to comply with its regulations.
The council has spoken out after its Building Control service successfully prosecuted Raymond Conway, of Wastwater Avenue, Workington, for breaches of Building Regulations.
Conway, 49, was fined a total of £1,476 after the council uncovered unsafe workmanship in two extensions he had built in Cleator Moor and Arlecdon.
