Market stalls during Taste Cumbria Festival

TIME is running out for traders to grab themselves a stall during July’s Taste Cumbria Summer Festival.

Copeland Council is offering existing or would be traders the chance to hire a market stall during the weekend.

The festival is set to take place on Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23, 2017, and similar events across the county have featured up to 40,000 visitors and benefited the local economy to the sum of up to £3 million per event.

Council staff showcase career opportunities

PUPILS have received an insight into the range of opportunities working in local government at a successful careers event.

Five members of Copeland Council staff attended the World of Work Day, held at Whitehaven Academy, in which Year 10 pupils had the chance to quiz them about their roles.

Chris Pickles, Copeland’s Work and Skills Programme Officer organised the Council’s attendance at the event. He was joined by Dennis Barkes (from the Housing department), Claire Rudd and Clare Henderson (from Customer Services) and Elaine Watson (from Environmental Health).

Mayor launches ground-breaking £1 million scheme

A REVOLUTIONARY £1 million scheme has been launched to transform Copeland’s towns – and applications open in two weeks’ time.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, has pledged £500k to regenerate shopfronts in Copeland’s towns and villages which will attract a further £500k from the private sector.

The Copeland Pride of Place Town Centre Regeneration Scheme encourages local business owners to enhance the external appearance of town centre shops and buildings as well as improving the borough’s built environment and street scene.

Community clean-up for Mirehouse estate

OVER 30 bags of rubbish were collected during a community clean-up of the Mirehouse estate in Whitehaven.

The litter-pick was organised by Councillor Mark Holliday, who represents Mirehouse on Copeland Borough Council, and was supported by the Council's Waste team.

Further to the general waste found including cans, bottles and plastic, the team discovered a discarded bike and a child's car seat.

Two Whitehaven town centre properties renovated

TWO Whitehaven town centre properties have received a major refurbishment thanks to a transformational heritage scheme.

48-50 Market Place, formerly the Little Hong Kong takeaway, has been divided and converted into two shops – the New Hong Kong takeaway and Timeless Beauty salon - and two flats above.

And 45 Market Place, which had been vacant for a number of years and was latterly Flowers 'n' Foliage, has been converted into a soon-to-be-opened gift shop, Little Whims, and a two-bedroom flat above.
