Copeland recyclers reach milestone

Published: 10/08/2018

COPELAND Council has collected the 1,000th tonne of recycling under its new kerbside scheme – that’s the equivalent of 100 double-decker buses.

It’s taken just over three months to reach the milestone – previously it would have taken around eight months to collect that amount of material.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “It’s great that we’ve reached this stage so quickly. People are embracing the scheme and making sure their materials are clean and sorted, so we really want to thank and congratulate them on reaching this milestone."

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, launched the Copeland Pride of Place campaign in January 2018 to highlight everything that is positive in the borough and to shine a light on those individuals who disrespect our communities through vandalism, fly-tipping, dog fouling and littering.

Electoral canvass is under way

Published: 02/08/2018

COPELAND’S annual electoral canvass is under way - and residents are being urged to ensure they have the right to vote.

The annual event asks people to confirm their details, or make any changes, so that they can be included on the new Register of Electors which will be published on December 1, 2018, ahead of local elections in May 2019.

The process started with a two-week electronic canvass period where all properties that have an associated email address have been sent an email by Copeland Council asking for confirmation of eligible residents at the property.

YOUNG adults who have been supported in care will not be required to pay council tax once they move into their own home in Copeland.

Copeland Council agreed this week to make all care leavers exempt from paying council tax, until they reach the age of 25.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “While they are supported by Children and Young People’s Services, care leavers can be faced with a new set of responsibilities, often without the family support and wider network that most other young people can rely on.
