Resident credits council with saving life

A VICTIM of domestic abuse has credited Copeland Borough Council for offering life-saving support.

Fifteen victims of domestic abuse have received specialist help and support from the Council’s Prevention and Crisis Support Officer, since the role was introduced in January 2018.

The service users were all homeless or at risk of homelessness.

One service user said: “In January 2018 I found myself in unfamiliar waters, with nowhere to turn.

Mayor supports Dementia Action Week

COPELAND Mayor Mike Starkie has joined forces with Age UK West Cumbria and Egremont school pupils to raise awareness of dementia.

Mr Starkie took part in a forget-me-not seed-planting event in the garden of the De Lucy Centre, Egremont, where he joined pupils from St Bridget’s School to help promote a more dementia-friendly community.

The event was organised by Age UK West Cumbria’s Community Connections Team as part of a range of activities and actions to support the Alzheimer’s Society’s national Dementia Action Week (May 21 to 27).

Time running out to enjoy popular exhibitions

TIME is running out for visitors to enjoy two exhibitions at The Beacon Museum.

Pirates: Fact and Fiction and Waggonways to Whitehaven: West Cumbria on Rails have both proved popular attractions at the Whitehaven harbourside museum and will be coming to an end on June 3.

Costumes from film and television combine with real artefacts in Pirates: Fact and Fiction to create a fun re-telling of myths and legends as the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through pirate history, film and literature.

£108,000 discount awarded to pubs in Copeland

PUBS in Copeland have raised a glass to a £108,000 discount on their business rates.

One hundred per cent of the 54 pubs that were eligible for the relief have now claimed their £2,000 discount through Copeland Borough Council.

The £1,000 discount on a pub’s National Non-Domestic Rates (business rates) was initially effective from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018. This has been extended and an additional £1,000 discount has been awarded to eligible pubs from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019.

Enjoy Copeland's coast with free dog events

COPELAND Council is supporting two free, fun events for dog owners this summer.

The events are at Haverigg on June 5 and St Bees on July 11, both from 11am until 3pm.

They are run by the Turning Tides Partnership, of which Copeland Council is a member. The events are part of the LOVEmyBEACH campaign for clean, safe beaches and seas.

Dog owners will be able to meet others and discuss ways they can work together to keep beaches and seas clean.

Copeland's services over the bank holiday

COPELAND Borough Council's offices will be closed this coming bank holiday Monday, May 28.

The Distington Hall Crematorium and its office will also be closed, but the Chapel of Remembrance will be open from 9am until 4.15pm.

There will be no household waste, garden and recycling collections on bank holiday Monday and all collections will be one day later than usual that week.

The Beacon Museum will be open from 10am until 4.30pm and is running family events during the half term week.
