COPELAND Council has reaffirmed its commitment to pay its staff the Voluntary Living Wage (VLW).
The Living Wage Foundation has announced an increase to its VLW rate to £8.75 per hour (£16,885 per year), and Copeland Council voted unanimously to become an accredited member of the Living Wage Foundation and implement the new minimum rate.

Copeland residents are being urged to make recycling a part of the festive season.
Coun Mark Holliday, Copeland's portfolio holder for customers and communities, said: “There are lots of extra things you can recycle over Christmas. The wrapping paper, extra cans and bottles from parties, card from toy packaging and Christmas cards can all be recycled, either through our kerbside recycling service or by taking it to one of our bring sites.
“And remember, you can always put out extra recycling, at any time of year. Just make sure it is secure so that it can't blow away.”

FURNITURE has been dumped on a rural road in Copeland.
A sofa and a wooden chair were fly-tipped on the road to Nethertown train station, and have now been removed by Copeland Council's waste team at a cost to the taxpayer.
Mark Holliday, Copeland Council's Portfolio Holder for Waste, said: “It’s a disgrace that our area is being blighted by people who have a complete disregard for others.

SCHOOLCHILDREN and residents gathered to get a closer look at Copeland's new kerbside recycling scheme this week.
Copeland Council was showing off an example of its new recycling vehicles, which will collect five different materials from April. Paper, glass, card, plastic and cans/tins will be collected from the kerbside for more than 95 per cent of Copeland's householders.
The new scheme was being showcased at Whitehaven Market on Thursday, when children from Hensingham Primary School visited, and Egremont Market on Friday, when Bookwell pupils came along.
