New councillor elected to Copeland Council

TOM Higgins has been elected to represent the Egremont South ward on Copeland Borough Council.
Councillor Higgins (Labour) won 354 votes to Conservative Jeff Hailes' 321 in the by-election held yesterday (Thursday). The turn-out was 23.8 per cent.
Coun Higgins, 63, said: "I was born and bred in Egremont and I am proud that people have chosen me to represent them on Copeland Council.
Budget consultation launched 2018/19

COPELAND Council has launched a consultation into next year’s budget – and wants the public’s views.
The Council must save £1 million in 2018/19, due largely to the reduction in Central Government grants, and is prioritising the delivery of its statutory commitments while increasingly using income and grants to run its discretionary services.
Stricter penalties for fly-tippers

COPELAND Council has introduced stricter measures to combat fly-tipping in the borough.
The Council agreed this week to issue culprits with a £250 fixed penalty notice for the offence, an increase from the previously imposed £200.
Councillor Mark Holliday, Portfolio Holder for Waste, said: “It’s a disgrace that our towns and rural areas are being blighted by people who have a complete disregard for others.
Pubs raise a glass to rates discount

PUBS in Copeland can raise a glass to a £1,000 discount on their business rates.
Copeland Council has formally rolled out the scheme this week and has announced that around 70 pubs are eligible for the discount in the borough. Application forms are going out this week to inform publicans how to claim their discount.
The one-off discount on a pub’s National Non Domestic Rates (business rates) is effective from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, and will be backdated to the start date.
