Council Christmas arrangements

COPELAND Borough Council offices (including Market Hall) will be closed from 4.30pm on Friday, December 22 until 9am on Tuesday, January 2.

The offices will also close one hour early (4pm) on Thursday, December 21 and will reopen at 9am on Friday, December 22.

The Millom office will close at 3pm on December 21 and 22, and will remain closed from December 22 until January 2. 

Copeland Hub celebrates first anniversary

A MULTI-AGENCY hub set up to tackle anti-social behaviour in Copeland is celebrating its first anniversary.

Copeland Hub, which is based in Whitehaven Police Station and led by Copeland Council and Cumbria Constabulary, has successfully dealt with a host of issues across the borough by allowing a range of agencies to work together under one roof.

The Hub was a pilot scheme funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner when it was created in November 2016, and has proved so successful that it is now being rolled out to the rest of the county.

Unemployed residents benefit from work academy

FOUR Copeland residents have secured jobs in the care industry thanks to an employability project.

Lakeland Carers and St George's Residential Home, based in Millom, have been working with Copeland Borough Council, Millom Network Centre and the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to deliver a sector-based work academy to recruit employees for their businesses.

Two of the graduates have already started work and a further two will start in the new year.

Council launches energy scheme

A FREE scheme to help residents save money on their energy bills is set to be launched by Copeland Council in partnership with iChoosr.

The Copeland Big Switch returns following three successful campaigns earlier this year, in which a high number of householders saved large amounts on their bills.

The scheme involves the organisers creating a large group of customers interested in cheaper tariffs, who then offer their custom as a group to the energy firm offering the best deal.

Recycling Roadshows head to town

NEXT week residents will get a first look at Copeland Council's new recycling service.

There will be two 'recycling roadshows' at Whitehaven and Egremont, featuring one of the new recycling vehicles, examples of the new containers, games and giveaways.

The events will take place on Thursday, December 7 at Whitehaven Market, and Friday, December 8 at Egremont Market. There will also be an event in the south of the borough before the scheme is launched.

Set up your stall at our festive markets

A RANGE of festivities is on offer at Whitehaven Market this Christmas with a series of events being held as a treat for traders and visitors alike.

Copeland Borough Council, which runs markets in Whitehaven, Cleator Moor and Egremont, is offering traders the chance to bag a stall over the festive period for a discounted rate of £12 per day if they sign up for four or more dates.

The Council is inviting stallholders and shop owners to set out their stocking fillers at markets held each Thursday and Saturday in December, beginning on December 2.

Council supports victims of domestic violence

VICTIMS of domestic abuse and sexual exploitation can now access increased support services provided by Copeland Borough Council.

The Council has recruited a full-time officer to support residents who are at risk of homelessness and have experienced – or at risk of abuse or sexual exploitation. 

The number of victims presenting as homeless in Copeland has risen by over 25% in the last 18 months and, with domestic abuse known to rise over the Christmas period, the Council is ensuring that it is providing much needed support to vulnerable residents.
