Launch event for £1 million scheme

Published: 28/07/2017

A TRANSFORMATIONAL £1 million scheme has been launched to revitalise Copeland and applications open on Monday.

Councillors, media and members of the business community gathered at The Beacon Portal, Whitehaven today (Thursday) to hear details of the scheme that will see the huge cash injection into the borough.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, has pledged £500k to regenerate shopfronts in Copeland’s towns and villages, alongside street improvements, which will attract a further £500k from the private sector.

Last chance to comment on conservation area plans

Published: 24/07/2017

TIME is running out for residents to comment on a number of Copeland's conservation areas.

Copeland Council is assessing some of its conservation areas in preparation for major investment on the borough - and wants to hear from the public.

Because the planned new nuclear power station at Moorside could bring associated developments close to the conservation areas of Beckermet, Corkickle  and the southern part of Whitehaven town centre, the Council is creating draft 'character appraisals' that people can read and suggest additions to.

Published: 19/07/2017

WORK is planned to start next week to demolish two dilapidated buildings on Whitehaven harbourside.

Copeland Council has confirmed that after a long and challenging period of intense discussion and negotiation, the owners are set to  demolish Mark House and substantial parts of The Park nightclub  on Monday – and the work is expected to be completed within 12 weeks.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, welcomed the news. He said: “I’m delighted that demolition work on Mark House and The Park will finally begin.

Copeland Council to report financial success

Published: 17/07/2017

COPELAND Council is set to report a £170,000 underspend for the last financial year, its end-of-year accounts reveal.

The figure represents a “fantastic achievement” for the Council, says Mayor Mike Starkie, in light of the financial challenges the authority has faced in recent years.

The provisional accounts, that are pending the sign-off from external auditors, show that Copeland spent £10.34m of its £10.51m budget, and the money saved will go forward to provide extra funding for next year’s budget.

Fly-tippers strike in Cleator Moor

Published: 14/07/2017

A LARGE number of household items have been found dumped in Cleator Moor.

Among the items left in an alley between Duke Street and Queen Street were a fridge/freezer, a mattress, a carpet, a chest of drawers, a chair and a television.

Because there was nothing within the fly-tipped items that could identify the culprit, Copeland Council has been forced to remove the waste itself, with the cost falling on the taxpayer.

Copeland Mayor Mike Starkie said: “It’s a disgrace that our towns are being blighted by people who have a complete disregard for others.
