Published: 15/08/2017

Members of the public have until Friday (August 18) to have their say on a new Draft Conservation Area Design Guide produced by Copeland Borough Council.

The guide has been created to help enhance and maintain the rich heritage of the borough’s conservation areas of Whitehaven, Cleator Moor, Egremont and Millom, the villages of Beckermet and St Bees and the areas of Hensingham and Corckicle, both in Whitehaven.

Vandals force play park closure

Published: 11/08/2017

VANDALS have forced the partial closure of a Whitehaven play park.

Copeland Council has been forced to fence off a climbing frame and play net at the Hensingham park after vandals ripped the protective mat below.

The Council will repair the damage – at a cost to the taxpayer – and the police has been informed of the incident, which was uncovered during a routine inspection earlier this week.

Councillor Mark Holliday, Portfolio Holder for Open Spaces, said: “This sort of damage is unacceptable and we take a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to it.

Young people to challenge prejudice

A CREATIVE competition is being held to encourage young people to celebrate diversity and challenge prejudice.

The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven is working with AWAZ Cumbria to host the Challenging Prejudice exhibition, which launches on September 30.

Ahead of the launch, AWAZ has been delivering workshops in Hensingham and St Mary’s Schools, Whitehaven. Both schools were invited to enter a creative competition, and the 161 entries it has attracted will form the basis of the upcoming exhibition.

Anti-social behaviour consultation launched

Published: 10/08/2017

COPELAND Council is asking residents and visitors for their views on a raft of measures used to counter anti-social behaviour in the borough.

A consultation has been launched in which people are invited to comment on the Council’s current restrictions on public alcohol consumption and policies on public dog control.

The consultation comes as the existing orders that cover anti-social behaviour linked to alcohol and dogs are being phased out by the Government. Copeland Council will replace these with Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) in October.

'Don't feed the seagulls' plea

Published: 10/08/2017

PLEASE don’t feed the seagulls - that’s the plea being made by Copeland Council in a new campaign leaflet.

Whitehaven, and Copeland’s other coastal towns and villages, are home to a large number of seagulls, and Copeland Council has published an information leaflet to help counter some of the problems they bring.

It details the law as it relates to seagulls, and outlines what measures can be taken to deter them, including eliminating their food source and preventing nesting sites.

Copeland to propose drop in councillor numbers

Published: 09/08/2017

COPELAND Council is set to request its councillor numbers to be reduced by more than a third.

Subject to agreement by the full council at a meeting on August 31, Copeland will ask the Local Government Boundary Commission (LGBC) to reduce the number of members it is required to have from 51 to 33.

After considering Copeland’s submission, the LGBC will confirm the councillor number in October, and the reduction it imposes will take effect from the next election in May 2019.
