First 10 businesses benefit from Mayor’s Scheme

TEN town centre businesses have reaped the rewards of Copeland Mayor Mike Starkie’s transformational regeneration scheme.

Over £35,000 of the fund has been awarded so far to businesses in Whitehaven, Millom and Cleator Moor.

Successful applicants include; Sporthouse, The Vine, Shakers, The Senhouse Centre, Savvy, The Flower Basket, Union Hall and Dixons, all in Whitehaven Town Centre. Also receiving grants are the Town Council building in Cleator Moor and Cambridge House Hotel in Millom.

Sarah Hodgson chops her locks for charity

RECENT bride Sarah Hodgson has chopped off her long locks for charity.

Sarah, who recently got married to her partner of 10 years, decided she would donate 12 inches of her hair to children who have lost theirs through cancer and other illnesses.

The Little Princess Trust provides wigs for children suffering with hair loss. Although the wigs are provided to those in need free of charge, they cost around £350 - £500 to produce.

Mayor to hold public meeting in Seascale

COPELAND Mayor Mike Starkie has announced a public meeting in Seascale.

Mr Starkie will hold the event in Seascale Methodist Church Hall on Wednesday, October 18 at 6.30pm, to give residents the chance to hear updates on a host of Copeland Council projects and to raise their own questions and issues.
 
Mr Starkie said: "When I was elected as Mayor I made a pledge that the Council will be open and transparent, and be accountable to the public.

Last Chance to Switch

Ten per cent of Copeland residents are in fuel poverty, so Copeland Borough Council is keen to help by offering this group buying scheme. It brings residents together to exert collective buying power, getting the best deal from the energy companies.

Roaring success for Whitehaven Market

A BIRTHDAY BONANZA saw people from all corners of the county visit Whitehaven Market on the first anniversary of its relaunch.

Free goody bags were on offer at Saturday’s (September 30) event as well as a range of new stalls and entertainment.

Whitehaven Market takes place every Thursday and Saturday and has been an increasing success since its relaunch in October 2016.

The number of regular stallholders has doubled over the past year and income for the market has increased by over 35 per cent.

Statement on Councillor Michael Guest

Michael Guest, a Copeland Borough Councillor and Whitehaven Town Councillor, was invited to a meeting with Copeland Borough Council to discuss a statement made on social media that contained serious allegations.

In the Facebook post dated July 14, Councillor Guest claimed: “Corruption in Copeland is endemic… politics in Copeland is about corruption and self-interest.”
