Council highlights penalties for building offences

COPELAND Council has highlighted to builders that they can face a large fine if they fail to comply with its regulations.

The council has spoken out after its Building Control service successfully prosecuted Raymond Conway, of Wastwater Avenue, Workington, for breaches of Building Regulations.

Conway, 49, was fined a total of £1,476 after the council uncovered unsafe workmanship in two extensions he had built in Cleator Moor and Arlecdon.

Council staff to the rescue

COPELAND Council's waste staff have been extra-busy being good Samaritans recently.

In just one week, they went above and beyond the call of duty, helping three unfortunate residents retrieve their belongings - including an iPad.

Town trail for budding mini historians

BRINGING Whitehaven’s rich history to life were a group of local schoolchildren who enjoyed a trail through town yesterday (Thursday, May 18).

The Henisngham Primary School pupils were led from The Beacon Museum into the town whilst learning of historic events such as the Wellington and William Pit disasters, alongside the harbour invasion at the hands of legendary naval commander and suspected pirate - John-Paul Jones.

Fly-tippers blight rural road

FLY-TIPPERS have dumped a large amount of cables and wiring on a rural Copeland road.

The cables were left on the roadside between Pica and Asby over the weekend – and it is the second time similar items have been dumped in the same area over the past week.

Copeland mayor Mike Starkie said: “It’s a disgrace that our beautiful area is being blighted by people who have a complete disregard for others.

“This was a large pile of waste left strewn over the road, which is a rural route and is unlit, and this could so easily have caused an accident.

Copeland Interim Housing Policy May 2017

On the 9th May 2017, Copeland Borough Council announced that it could not demonstrate a five-year supply of housing sites. To support and encourage sustainable development in the short term the Council adopted an interim housing policy.

As of 26th November 2020 the Council is now able to demonstrate a five year supply of deliverable sites as shown in the Five Year Supply 2020 document. The Interim Housing Policy is therefore no longer up-to-date and has been revoked.

Lottery boss visits Whitehaven

THE BEACON Museum was delighted to welcome Nathan Lee, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund North West on Friday (12 May).

Mr Lee and his colleague Maya Sharma, Development Officer, visited the Beacon Museum and took the opportunity to look around the new conference centre currently under construction which will be named the ‘Beacon Portal.’

The Portal will provide meeting and event space to hire to complement the Museum facilities as well as housing many of the group sessions and learning activities which the Beacon Museum currently deliver for local school groups and more.

All change for disabled swimmers

A BRAND new disabled changing area was opened to the public today at the Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre.

Mayor Mike Starkie cut the ribbon at the fantastic new facility in Hensingham, alongside Georgina Ternent, public health locality manager at Cumbria County Council.

The changing rooms, which cost around £60,000, have been funded by Copeland Borough Council and the County Council's Changing Places Fund. They offer unrivalled facilities for people with a whole range of disabilities and are available to visitors who may not even be using the pool or gym.
