Distington bypass clean up

Over 120 bags of rubbish were cleared from a well-used dual carriageway in Copeland recently.

Copeland Borough council staff worked alongside Kier Services on behalf of Highways England to clear the stretch of road on the A595. The operation involved five staff members working over three hours each to clear the mess.

Councillor Mark Holiday, Portfolio Holder for Waste Management, said: “We urge the public to show some consideration when disposing of waste.

What makes conservation areas special?

COPELAND Council is assessing some of its conservation areas in preparation for major investment on the borough - and it wants to hear from the public.

Because the planned new nuclear power station at Moorside could bring associated developments close to the conservation areas of Beckermet, Corkickle  and the southern part of Whitehaven town centre, the council is creating draft 'character appraisals' that locals can read and suggest additions to.

Top marks for Millom eateries

MILLOM eateries are among the most hygienic in Copeland, current ratings reveal.

Almost 97 per cent of premises in the town have achieved the highest national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme of five (very good), four (good) or three (satisfactory) following inspections carried out by Copeland Council’s Environmental Health team.

There are 64 food establishments registered in Millom that are subject to inspection, including pubs, restaurants, cafes, bakeries, greengrocers and schools.

Inspectors examine how well managed and hygienic food preparation and storage areas are.
