Two Whitehaven town centre properties renovated

TWO Whitehaven town centre properties have received a major refurbishment thanks to a transformational heritage scheme.

48-50 Market Place, formerly the Little Hong Kong takeaway, has been divided and converted into two shops – the New Hong Kong takeaway and Timeless Beauty salon - and two flats above.

And 45 Market Place, which had been vacant for a number of years and was latterly Flowers 'n' Foliage, has been converted into a soon-to-be-opened gift shop, Little Whims, and a two-bedroom flat above.

Copeland Borough Council has now adopted the Conservation Area Design Guide SPD as from December 5, 2017.

Draft Conservation Area Design Guide

A NEW guide has been produced in order to help enhance and maintain the rich heritage of the borough’s conservation areas, and Copeland Council would like to hear what you think.

The draft Conservation Area Design Guide focuses on the four towns of Whitehaven, Cleator Moor, Egremont and Millom, the villages of Beckermet and St Bees and the areas of Hensingham and Corckicle, both in Whitehaven.

Residents urged to report empty homes

COPELAND residents are being asked to identify empty homes in their neighbourhoods.

Copeland Council has a dedicated Empty Homes Officer whose role is to reduce the number of vacant homes in the borough.

There are currently 1,193 empty homes on the council’s register; 343 of which have been empty for more than two years and 56 are described as ‘uninhabitable’.

Market stalls on offer during Summer Festival

COPELAND council is offering six lucky traders the chance to hire a market stall during the upcoming Taste Cumbria Summer Festival.

The festival is set to take place on Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23, 2017, and similar events across the county have featured up to 40,000 visitors and benefited the local economy to the sum of up to £3 million per event.

Taste Cumbria has around 40 stallholders set to sell their produce so far alongside some of the county’s best known chefs who will be showcasing their skills throughout the weekend.

Council to capitalise on World Heritage status

COPELAND Borough Council has pledged to make the most of the opportunities that could come from the Lake District gaining World Heritage Site (WHS) status.

Two thirds of the borough lies within the National Park, and at the end of July UNESCO will announce whether the bid has been successful. It could generate millions in tourism income and create socio-economic growth across Copeland.
