Disabled facilities transformed in Copeland

A state-of-the-art disabled changing area will be unveiled next week at the Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre.

The facility - funded by Copeland Borough Council and the Changing Places fund - will allow people with a wide range of disabilities to fully access the pool and gym in Hensingham. It includes a spacious shower, adult-sized changing table, a hoist and other facilities. It can also be used by disabled people and their carers who are in the area and need to change - even if they are not using the pool.

Free market stalls for new traders

AN EXCITING opportunity has arisen for budding stallholders to have a go at selling products at their local market - for free.

To celebrate the national ‘Love Your Local Market’ campaign, Copeland Borough Council is offering one free of charge pitch at Whitehaven Market on May 18, 20, 25, 27 and one at Egremont and Cleator Moor Market on May 19 and 26.

In addition, those who are selected to sell their products at Whitehaven Market will be provided with a stall, and all they need to do is bring along the products they wish to sell on the day.

Mayor issues statement on Moorside power station

Copeland's mayor Mike Starkie has issued the following statement on the news that plans for the Moorside nuclear power station in West Cumbria are being paused while NuGen carries out a strategic review.

Mr Starkie said: "I have always fully supported NuGen's Moorside nuclear project.

"It is crucial to West Cumbria that this project goes ahead to ensure that we have jobs and prosperity secured for present and future generations, ensuring a lasting legacy.

 

Oswald Coyles memory could be honoured

A RESPECTED former mayor of Copeland could be honoured by the renaming of a council chamber in his memory.

Oswald Coyles – known as Ossy – twice held the post of Copeland’s mayor during a 30-year career on the council.  And Copeland councillors will vote next week on whether to rename their chamber in the Copeland Centre after him.

Mr Coyles was an original member when Copeland Council formed in 1973, and was appointed honorary alderman of the borough in 2003.

£25,000 awarded to employment support project

A FIVE-FIGURE cash boost will enhance the employment prospects of Copeland residents.

Copeland Council has donated £25,000 to The Phoenix Enterprise Centre, Cleator Moor, which will part fund its latest employment support project.

Copeland Council's mayor Mike Starkie today (Tuesday) presented the cheque in support of the project which offers IT facilities and training to all unemployed Copeland residents.

Creating Careers in Cumbria Programme

ELEVEN local unemployed residents have celebrated their graduation today (Friday) from the Creating Careers in Cumbria programme.

Morgan Sindall and Copeland Borough Council provided the candidates with work experience and training that aims to increase their prospects of future employment.

As part of the programme, the group worked alongside The Outward Bound Trust experiencing four days of team building, leadership and development activities to build confidence and teach essential employment skills.

Date for Copeland Council's Annual General Meeting

RESIDENTS are invited to attend Copeland Borough Council's Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 9 at 2pm in Egremont Market Hall.

Members of the press are also invited to report and take photographs.

The occasion will include the appointment of the chairman and deputy chairman of the council for the forthcoming year, along with a look back at the previous year from the mayor Mike Starkie.

It will be followed at 3.15pm by an Extraordinary Meeting of the council.
