Council supports victims of domestic violence

VICTIMS of domestic abuse and sexual exploitation can now access increased support services provided by Copeland Borough Council.

The Council has recruited a full-time officer to support residents who are at risk of homelessness and have experienced – or at risk of abuse or sexual exploitation.

The number of victims presenting as homeless in Copeland has risen by over 25% in the last 18 months and, with domestic abuse known to rise over the Christmas period, the Council is ensuring that it is providing much needed support to vulnerable residents.

Council's new service takes shape

COPELAND residents will be given three plastic boxes and one bag when the borough's new recycling service begins next year.

In April 2018 Copeland Council will launch a new kerbside service which will collect paper, card, plastic, glass and tins/cans from around 95 per cent of homes. It is hoped the scheme will see recycling rates in the borough shoot up.

This afternoon the council's Executive committee agreed that three stackable boxes would be issued - one for paper, one for glass, and one for plastic and cans. These will be accompanied by alarge weighted bag for card.

Clean Copeland Seas

ALL of Copeland's bathing waters have been declared clean by the Environment Agency - and two have reached the very highest standards of cleanliness.

St Bees and Silecroft were marked as 'excellent' in the annual assessment of bathing waters. Seascale's water was 'good' and Haverigg's 'sufficient.'

St Bees and Silecroft, both well-visited beauty spots, are among just 11 to reach the 'excellent' standard of of 31 bathing waters in the north west.

Recycling rejected after contamination

A VEHICLE-LOAD of recycling had to be scrapped after it was contaminated by non-recyclable items.

A toaster and a slow cooker were dumped in a recycling bin that was intended for paper and card only, which resulted in the entire load being rejected at the recycling depot.

The contaminants, which also included plastic bags full of household and garden waste, were discovered in a load that had been collected by Copeland Council from recycling sites across the borough.

Community big build project completed

A three-day big build at Seathwaite Community Centre in Mirehouse, Whitehaven, has successfully concluded.

Morgan Sindall, Sellafield Ltd, Copeland Borough Council and Cumbria Constabulary joined together for the project to build a shed and allotment area at the Community Centre, with the Men in Sheds group helping with the final stages to get the project over the line.

The project was co-ordinated from the Copeland Hub in Whitehaven.

Council set to launch new recycling service

COPELAND’S residents will soon benefit from a new doorstep recycling service.

Copeland Borough Council is preparing to launch its new kerbside service that will see crews collect five items from households; plastic, paper, glass, tins/cans and cardboard.

The service will start in April 2018, and residents can get a sneak preview of the type of new dedicated recycling vehicles the Council is going to use at two roadshows in Whitehaven and Egremont next month.
