Beacon Easter activities

Published: 13/03/2018

The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven has a host of arty activities on offer for the Easter break.

The busy fortnight includes prominent local artists and a brand new exhibition.

Currently Pirates Pants and Wellyphants, a witty interactive art exhibition, is proving a massive hit with younger families. Children have been designing pants in an effort to catch the attention of Nick Sharratt, the famous illustrator behind the exhibition.

Magda Jackson, visitor host at the Beacon Museum, said: "Every day during Easter we'll host three Wellyphants Workshops, adding a little extra fun to the Wellyphants experience. Children can become part of the story with crafts,  music and laughter guaranteed.”

In addition, a brand new exhibition featuring pirate costumes and artefacts will arrive in time for the Easter holidays. Pirates: Fact and Fiction features props from film and television, including spectacular costumes from Pirates of the Caribbean, Black Sails, Peter Pan and Spartacus.

Alan Irwin, development manager at the museum, said: "Pirates: Fact and Fiction arrives on March 31 - it's great to have two such exciting exhibitions in the museum at the same time. Pirates will be great fun and informative, with a wide variety of costumes, model ships, cannons and other artefacts on display.”

There are also events throughout the holidays. Dearham-based artist Jenny Daymond has recently illustrated books for the National Trust, and to celebrate the new Peter Rabbit film, she will help children design Beatrix Potter-inspired gardens. These workshops run at 1pm and 3pm from April 2-4.

For budding authors and artists, local children’s author and illustrator Tim Stead will lead introductory illustration workshops on Fridays April 6 and 13, at 1pm and 3pm.

Crafty children and adults can make magic bracelets or charms with Truly Scrumptious Jewellery on Saturday April 7.

For adults there will be a full-day beginners oil painting workshop on Sunday April 8 and a willow weaving workshop on Sunday April 15.

More information on all these events and exhibitions is available at The Beacon Museum's Facebook page or at www.thebeacon-whitehaven.co.uk, or by calling 01946 592302.
