Youngsters gear up to learn

Young cyclists from Whitehaven Harbour Youth Club are to get the skills they need to fix their bikes when enjoying the local routes.
The training is part of the Whitehaven Lengthsman scheme, funded by Copeland Community Fund and Copeland Borough Council.
The session, on July 24 near Keswick, will show cyclists what to do if they have a problem with their bike while they are out on the roads.
Celebrating seasonal food

Two free events celebrating fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables are to run in Copeland this September.
One event, in Egremont, is a cookery demonstration from Grainne Jakobson.
The second, in Lamplugh, allows participants to learn about growing food, and together cook and eat a meal.
The sessions are part of the Lengthsmen schemes, facilitated by Copeland Borough Council and funded by Copeland Community Fund, Leconfield Estates, Home Group and parish councils.

Action against misuse of recycling service

Following continued misuse Copeland Council has suspended garden waste collections for seven householders who repeatedly put household rubbish in their brown bins.
Green waste bins from the seven homes in Cleator Moor, contained large amounts of non-garden waste, which resulted in an entire lorry load having to be sent away for disposal, rather than made into compost.
It means around 600 other conscientious gardeners had their recycling efforts go – literally - to waste.

Go back in time with the team at the Beacon Museum this weekend (Saturday July 11) and explore industrial Victorian Whitehaven as part of the National Festival of Archaeology.
The Mysteries of Victorian Whitehaven is part of the national celebration, co-ordinated by the Council for British Archaeology.
The festival offers over 1,000 events nationwide, organised by museums, heritage organisations, national and country parks, universities, local societies, and community archaeologists.
