Whitehaven transformation project hailed a success

A FIVE-YEAR transformation project to revitalise an area of Whitehaven town centre has been hailed a success.

Residents were asked to share their thoughts, through a survey, on the success of the Whitehaven Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) which has transformed the area of James Street and Market Place, Whitehaven.

More than 98 per cent of survey respondents believed that the properties and character of the area looked better than before the regeneration took place.

Copeland celebrates clean bathing waters

THE WATER at Copeland's four bathing beaches is clean and two have excellent water quality.

St Bees and Silecroft have excellent water quality, Seascale has good and Haverigg's is 'sufficient.' The results mean locals and visitors to this attractive coast can swim and enjoy the beaches in confidence.

The Environment Agency tests water at specific sites every week from May to September,  to ensure the water is safe and clean for swimming and other activities.

Work Academy sets locals on career path

Eight unemployed people are now firmly on the career path after starting a 'work academy' with Copeland Work and Skills Partnership.

The scheme aims to get candidates ready for the workplace with employability skills and work experience. This latest two-week programme focuses on the hospitality and tourism sector.

It is supported by employers Summergrove Halls and the Georgian House Hotel, who will ensure candidates are appropriately prepared for this sector. There is even the chance of a job at the end of the scheme for the right candidates.

Tributes paid to former Copeland Mayor

TRIBUTES have been paid to William Southward, a former Mayor of Copeland, who has died aged 79.

Mr Southward represented Cleator Moor North on the borough council from 1991 to 2015, and was awarded the honour of being made an Alderman of the Borough in 2016. He was Mayor in 2004/05 and also held a seat on Cleator Moor Town Council for almost 25 years.

Mr Southward, who died in hospital on Wednesday morning surrounded by his family, was married to Sylvia for 56 years; they had three children, 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Budget consultation launched 2019/20

COPELAND Council has launched a consultation into next year’s budget – and wants to the public’s views.

The council must save £500,000 in 2019/20, due largely to the reduction in Central Government grants, and is prioritising the delivery of its statutory commitments while increasingly using income and grants to run its discretionary services.

Crisis training for Council staff

COLLEAGUES at Copeland Borough Council are now trained in Mental Health First Aid.

Staff from the housing, council tax and benefits teams are now equipped to deal with people suffering from mental illness including those at crisis point seeking council services.

Colleagues undertook a two-day intensive course provided by Mental Health First Aid England (MHFA) which included: raising awareness and recognising the signs of mental illness, developing a better understanding, reducing the stigma and dealing with those who have depression and anxiety.
