Copeland recyclers do their bit

Copeland Council is saying a big thank you to residents who made a real effort to recycle their cans and bottles after the Christmas festivities.

Figures show the borough's recyclers increased the amount of glass and cans they recycled by almost 30 per cent from December 2017 to January 2018.

The increase totalled 40 tonnes - the equivalent of four double decker buses. The value of recyclable materials varies widely, but currently this represents extra income for the council of £7,560.

Copeland Council agrees its budget

COPELAND Borough Council has unanimously agreed its budget for 2018/19.

Councillors voted last night (Tuesday) to accept Mayor Mike Starkie’s proposed budget for the next financial year, which includes over £2 million investment in services.

Mr Starkie said: “I am delighted that our councillors voted unanimously to accept my budget proposals, and I’d like to publicly thank them for their support.

New recycling scheme moves nearer

COPELAND'S brand new recycling service moves a step nearer next week when residents start to receive their plastic boxes and bags.

Council staff begin the mammoth task of delivering around 130,000 boxes and bags this Monday, February 26. The deliveries will be completed in around six weeks.

It's part of the preparation for the new scheme starting in April, which will see five different recyclable materials collected at the kerbside: plastic, card, paper, metal and glass.

Community gathers for Egremont clean-up

EGREMONT has benefited from a successful community clean-up event.

More than 30 bags of rubbish were collected during the two-hour blitz, with volunteers targeting a number of areas of town, with the vicinities of West Lakes Academy, Market Hall and Falcon Club receiving attention.

The event involved representatives of Egremont Town Council, Calderwood House, Works 4 You and a team from the town’s Co-Op store.
