Council creates two tourism jobs

COPELAND Council is driving forward its tourism agenda with the recruitment of two members of staff dedicated to attracting more visitors to the borough.

The council is currently advertising for two newly-created posts - a Tourism Sector Development Officer and a Coastal Programme Officer - to develop the tourism offer in the borough.

The Tourism Sector Development Officer will work with the private and public sector, as well as community partners, to develop new products, activities and attractions in the borough to increase visitor numbers.

£650k cash injection for borough’s buildings

MORE than £650k has been invested in improving the appearance of commercial premises across the borough.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, launched the Pride of Place building grants scheme in 2017 and so far 109 businesses have benefited.

Mr Starkie said: “The difference this scheme has brought to the appearance of business premises in the borough is phenomenal.

“It’s evident that this funding was much needed by the number of applications we received and the fact that more than 100 premises in the borough have been revitalised.

Council issues 'don't feed the seagulls' plea

THE seagull nesting season is still underway and Copeland residents are being urged not to feed the birds.

Nesting gulls can be particularly aggressive and have been known to swoop on people if their nests are nearby. They also spread litter around and can be noisy.

Copeland Council is asking residents and visitors not to feed the birds to deter them from nuisance behaviour.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: "We know it is tempting to throw scraps for the gulls, but it does increase their numbers, as they will go wherever there is food.

Crematorium to mark Father's Day

A SPECIAL memorial ceremony is being held in the grounds of Distington Hall Crematorium next week to mark Father’s Day.

A tree-planting ceremony will be held at 12.30pm on Friday, June 14 to give families the chance to remember their much-missed family members. It will also feature readings.

The Father’s Day event follows successful Christmas and Mother’s Day services held at the crematorium, and a further event is planned for Baby Loss Awareness Week in October.

Mayor mucks in to help birthday celebrations

COPELAND Mayor Mike Starkie donned chefs' whites to help a not-for-profit cafe celebrate its 10th birthday this week.

Cafe West in Whitehaven's King Street is marking a decade of business with several events, including asking Copeland's Mayor to do a morning's work experience at the busy eatery.
