£60,000 awarded to business

ALMOST £60,000 has been awarded to businesses in the borough to improve the appearance of their commercial premises.

So far grants have been awarded to 26 businesses in Copeland as part of Copeland Borough Council’s building grants scheme.

Businesses can apply for up to £5,000 for improvements to shopfronts, windows and frames, doorways, external decoration and signage. It is a 50 per cent contribution that means that businesses are required to invest in their premises to match-fund the grant.

Mayor condemns litter louts

COPELAND’S Mayor has condemned “litter louts” that are blighting the borough.  

Mike Starkie spoke out as he joined the Copeland Borough Council waste team to clear the litter found in the town centre and on roadside verges in Whitehaven. He has also called for all fast food restaurants to help tackle the issue.

In the last month alone, the team has amassed a staggering 190 bags of litter collected from the boroughs roadsides.

Townscape boost for historic area of Whitehaven

More than £120,000 of investment is being ploughed into historic shop fronts in Whitehaven's Market Place.

The latest grants from the Townscape Heritage Initiative are for work at 35, 36 and 38 James Street (Cafe 35, AG Fashion and James Street Barber Shop) and The Chicken Shop at 42 Market Place.

Owners of the James Street properties, R&I Robson Ltd and W H Robson Ltd, will receive £76,675 for new sliding sash windows, shop fronts, roof repairs, re-rendering and external decoration. Work has already begun here and should be complete by the summer.

New guide to protect Copeland’s rich heritage

A NEW guide has been produced which will enhance and maintain Copeland’s conservation areas.

The guide has been produced by Copeland Borough Council and will aim to protect the conservation areas of Whitehaven, Cleator Moor, Egremont and Millom, the villages of Beckermet and St Bees and the areas of Hensingham and Corkickle, both in Whitehaven. 

The document focuses on maintaining the architectural heritage of the area including advice on everything from the restoration and maintenance of period features to external signage and paint colours.

A clean sweep for Calderwood residents

RESIDENTS of an Egremont hostel are now trained to prepare foods to professional standards. 

Calderwood House residents have been provided with advice and guidance on how to keep their kitchen clean, and food preparation safe, free of charge by Copeland Borough Council.

The council has been working with residents to provide advice and guidance on how to prepare food properly, which will benefit the residents when they move into their own homes.
