Care leavers to receive council tax discount

YOUNG adults who have been supported in care will not be required to pay council tax once they move into their own home in Copeland.
Copeland Council agreed this week to make all care leavers exempt from paying council tax, until they reach the age of 25.
Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “While they are supported by Children and Young People’s Services, care leavers can be faced with a new set of responsibilities, often without the family support and wider network that most other young people can rely on.
Summer sun and dino dress-ups at the Beacon Museum

THERE are some fantastic family activities at Whitehaven's Beacon Museum during the summer holidays. They accompany the amazing Brick Dinos LEGO exhibition, which runs until the end of September.
Every day from July 21, prehistoric posers can take their own 'dino selfies' at the museum. Props and dinosaur costumes will be on hand along with the terrifying T Rex twins Chomper and Stomper at 11.30am and 2pm.
Visitors can also drop in to a free 'make your own dinosaur' activity between 10am and 4pm each day.
Job success for academy graduates

EIGHT unemployed residents have secured jobs in the care sector as a result of an employability programme delivered in Whitehaven.
Human Support Group, based in Hensingham, has been working with partners in Copeland Work & Skills Partnership as part of a sector-based work academy to prepare and recruit people for their business. Eight candidates have now been offered part-time carer positions as a result of the scheme.
Councils to help fight food poverty

COPELAND Council is part of an innovative scheme putting healthy food at the heart of communities.
The council, along with Allerdale Borough Council, has funded a £20,000 pilot scheme looking at improving health and wellbeing using food which would otherwise be wasted. The project is also being supported by Cumbria County Council.
Today councillors attended an initial event aimed at finding out more about what the community of Sandwith, one of the county's most deprived, would like to see.
