Tis the season to recycle

COPELAND Council is asking residents to make this festive season a bumper one for recycling.

The council introduced an improved kerbside recycling service in April this year, extending the materials collected to include paper, metal, glass, card and plastic.

Copeland students graduate from innovative scheme

THE FUTURE is bright for Copeland pupils as they graduate from innovative scheme.

Pupils from West Lakes Academy and Whitehaven Academy have graduated from the Future Pathways programme run by Copeland Hub, and sponsored by Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure.

The students have undertaken a 10-week programme which aims to prepare them for the future by teaching them skills through activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, bush craft and archery, alongside confidence-building and team-building exercises.

Festive fancies on offer at Whitehaven Market

WHITEHAVEN’S Christmas markets kicked off on Saturday with Christmas carols for all.

Local group Singstars and pupils from St James’ Junior School performed for shoppers on December 8.

Santa invited children from Copeland and beyond to come and check if they’re on the naughty or nice list this year and visitors were able to indulge in a warming winter waffle from Blessings Bakery whilst browsing the goods on offer.

Good included a selection of toys, books, cosmetics, candles, local crafts, cakes and fruit from one of the 18 stalls.

Free parking for Christmas

COPELAND Council is offering free parking this festive period.

All 10 of the car parks that the council runs will be free to use from Saturday, December 22 to Tuesday, January 1 (inclusive).

Included in the offer is School House Lane, Senhouse Street, Whitehaven Sports Centre, Copeland Centre, The Ginns, The Beacon Museum and North Shore (all Whitehaven), Chapel Street and Beck Green (Egremont) and St Bees Foreshore. 

Copeland Council Christmas opening hours

COPELAND Borough Council offices (including Market Hall and Millom) will be closed from 1pm on Monday, December 24.

Our Market Hall, Whitehaven office will reopen at 9am on Wednesday, January 2 and our Millom Office will open at 9am on Thursday, January 3.

The Distington Hall Crematorium office will close at 1pm on Monday, December 24 and will reopen on Thursday, December 27, and will close again for one day on Tuesday, January 1. The Chapel of Remembrance is open from 9am until 4.15pm every day throughout the Christmas period. 

Victims urged not to suffer in silence

VICTIMS of domestic abuse, with nowhere to go, have been encouraged to put an end to their suffering by contacting Copeland Council.

Domestic abuse incidents almost treble over the Christmas period, with 617 incidents recorded in West Cumbria during December 2017.

The council has provided specialist help and support to 37 victims of domestic abuse through its Prevention and Crisis Support Officer since the role was introduced in January 2018.

The service users were all homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Santa makes his way to town for festive markets

FESTIVE fancies are on offer as visitors are set to flock to Copeland for Whitehaven’s Christmas markets on Saturday, December 8 and 15.
