Copeland pushes for more community-led housing

COPELAND Council is partnering in an exciting new Cumbria and Lancaster Community Led Housing Hub.

The hub encourages communities to combat housing problems in their areas focusing on their individual needs and options available to them. It puts communities in touch with funding sources and can introduce them to specialist advisors.

One example of a successful community-led housing initiative is a scheme run by residents in Ulpha.

Copeland’s green spaces celebrated

COPELAND Council celebrated Love Parks Week (July 12 – 21) with a host of activities enjoyed by residents, councillors and employees.

The council’s Parks and Open Spaces team organised a range of events for all to enjoy to celebrate the national green spaces awareness week.

Councillors and Council staff took part in a litter pick and mile-long health walk around Castle Park, Whitehaven. A family bumblebee scavenger hunt was held for residents as well as another one-mile walk round the park.

Eric to lead innovative coastal project

PLANS for an innovative and ambitious coastal challenge route have taken a step forward with the appointment of a project leader.
 
Eric Barker has taken up the role of Coastal Programme Officer with Copeland Borough Council and is responsible for leading the delivery of the £1.6 million Connecting Cumbria’s Hidden Coast recreational route. Stretching from Whitehaven to Millom, the route will feature adrenalin activities, cycling facilities and art installations along its unbroken 40-mile trail.
 

Householders urged to make waste collection checks

HOUSEHOLDERS in Copeland are being urged to ensure that their bulky waste is being disposed of by an appropriately licensed collector.

The reminder from Copeland Council and the Environment Agency comes after a number of incidents whereby items have been dumped by alleged disposal firms or individuals, leaving the householder liable for a fixed penalty fine, or facing a court case and a hefty fine for fly-tipping.

Householders are asked to make the following checks before paying someone to take their bulky waste away:

Copeland Mayor urges residents to give blood

Copeland Mayor, Mike Starkie is urging residents to sign up to the blood donor register. 

Each year the NHS needs new donors to replace those who can no longer donate.

Blood is used to save many lives each day, not just those who require emergency treatment, but those, including children, who require transfusions each week to treat life threatening medical conditions.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “Yesterday I signed up to become a blood donor.

Bright future ahead for Copeland students

THE FUTURE is bright for Copeland pupils as they graduate from innovative award scheme.

In total 110 students from Bookwell School, Egremont, and St James’ Junior School, Whitehaven have completed the Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS). These are the only students to complete the programme and be presented with a JASS Bronze Award in West Cumbria.

The students, aged seven to 11, have undertaken an 11-month programme which aims to support young people on their journey through school by teaching them valuable life skills.

Business boost for Copeland

A TOTAL of 129 businesses were opened or relaunched in Copeland during the last year, new figures reveal.

Copeland Council has reported the figure based on those who registered for National Non Domestic Rates (NNDR), known as business rates, from May 2018 to April 2019.

The list includes shops, cafes, pubs, playgroups, warehouses, beauty salons, offices and guest houses, with July (13) and November (19) the busiest months for new or relaunched businesses.
