Garden waste collections restart for spring

Published: 02/03/2020

GARDEN waste collections are about to restart in Copeland.

The seasonal service begins again on Monday, March 16, after its annual winter suspension.

The fortnightly collections are for grass, leaves and clippings – there is a full list of what can and can’t be put in garden waste bins at www.copeland.gov.uk.

Residents will also find their waste collection calendar there, detailing exactly which date their collection is due on. Householders should make sure their bin is put out before 7am on the day of collection.

Copeland's Portfolio Holder for Recycling and Waste, Councillor Steve Morgan, said: "For those not able to compost garden waste at home, this is a great way to ensure that it gets recycled.

"It is sent to a local company to be made into a high-quality compost. That's why it's really important that only grass, leaves, clippings and twigs are put into the bins. If the load is contaminated with other things, it risks being rejected - this means extra costs in time, transport and the loss of recycling income."

Home composting is the most environmentally-friendly way to dispose of green waste and discounted compost bins are available at www.recycleforcumbria.org

New waste collection calendars have been sent out to residents this week, and calendars are always available at www.copeland.gov.uk in the My Property section.
