Council's new Executive appointed at AGM

COPELAND Council officially appointed its new Executive Committee at its Annual General Meeting yesterday.

The five person committee, led by Mayor Mike Starkie, is the decision-making body for the council.

Its members are:
Mayor Starkie (independent)
Deputy Mayor David Moore (Conservative, Gosforth and Seascale, and Leader of the Conservative group) 
Coun Mike McVeigh (Labour, Egremont, and Leader of the Labour group)
Gwynneth Everett (Labour, Arlecdon and Ennerdale)
Steve Morgan (independent, Arlecdon and Ennerdale)

Copeland's new Chair and Deputy sworn in

COPELAND Council appointed its new Chair and her deputy at its Annual General Meeting yesterday.

Coun Joan Hully took over the Chairmanship, and Coun Charles Maudling will serve as Deputy Chair.

Coun Hully is a Labour councillor for Cleator Moor. Her chairmanship follows that of Coun Peter Connolly. Charles Maudling is an independent councillor for Whitehaven Central.

Council domestic abuse support service saves lives

MORE THAN 100 people affected by domestic violence have been supported by Copeland Council.

Since the Council introduced a specialist role to support victims of domestic abuse and sexual exploitation, the Council has supported 55 women and men, and 50 children who were all homeless or at risk of homelessness.

The Prevention and Crisis Support Officer has been in place since January 2018, ensuring vulnerable people can get the housing and support they need.

Beach cleaners in action for the summer

COPELAND Council has employed extra help to ensure its beaches stay pristine this summer.

The council takes on two seasonal beach cleaners every year from May until the end of September, to help deal with the extra litter created at the four amenity beaches and the nearby villages.

Gary Fletcher and John Harris pick up litter, empty bins and keep an eye on the recycling areas at St Bees Beach, Seascale, Haverigg and Silecroft beaches. Both men have experience in the role, having taken up the seasonal positions in previous years.

Copeland Council in Living Wage accreditation

COPELAND Council has been accredited as a Living Wage Employer.

The council has achieved the endorsement from the Living Wage Foundation due to its commitment to paying its staff the living wage as a minimum.

The living wage - a rate calculated against the cost of living and a voluntary benchmark for employers - is currently £9 per hour (£17,363 per year) and is reviewed annually. It is currently 79p per hour more than the National Living Wage.

Copeland councillors voted to formally seek accreditation last year.

Council's bank holiday arrangements

COPELAND Borough Council's offices will be closed this coming bank holiday Monday, May 27. 

There will be no household waste, garden or recycling collections on Monday and all collections will be one day later than usual that week. If your collection is due on Friday, it will take place on Saturday. 

The Distington Hall Crematorium and its office will also be closed, but the Chapel of Remembrance will be open from 9am until 4.15pm.

The Beacon Museum will be open from 10am until 4.30pm (last entry 3.45pm).

Work starts on crematorium investment

WORK has started on a significant investment programme at Distington Hall Crematorium.

 

Preparatory work is now under way at the Copeland Council-owned facility that will allow for the installation of a new, second cremator.

 

The council has committed substantial funding to purchase and install the cremator that will improve efficiency. Additionally, for the first time, the crematorium will benefit from the installation of specialist equipment in order to improve environmental performance.
