A SCHEME aimed at increasing safety and improving standards in licensed premises in North and West Cumbria will be launched next week.
The national Best Bar None scheme will be rolled out on Tuesday, March 5, with licensees invited to a launch event in Whitehaven to find out more.

THE volume of waste that has been littered and fly-tipped in Copeland has decreased significantly in the last two years, new figures show.
Copeland Council received 301 reports of fly-tipping in 2018/19, a reduction from the 434 reports in 2016/17.
In line with the drop in the number of reports, the volume of fly-tipped waste the council collected is on the decrease, with 23 tonnes collected this year; a reduction from the 47 tonnes in 2016/17.

TEN community-led houses in the picturesque village of Ulpha are being revitalised.
Copeland Borough Council has awarded £73,500 to support the project in which the historical cottages are owned and managed by the Joseph and Eleanor Gunson Almshouse Trust and offer social housing for local people in need.
All current residents are over 65 and typically have retired from the farming or forestry industries where accommodation would have been included with their role. The cottages allow these residents to stay within the community, close to friends and family.

COPELAND Council is bucking national trends in its budget for the forthcoming year, a new survey has revealed.
The annual Local Government Finance Survey, published today, reveals that three-quarters of councils nationally are increasing council tax for 2019-20 by more than 2.5 per cent, and one in 10 will have an increase of more than 5 per cent; Copeland Council’s rise will be only 1.95 per cent.
