Copeland’s revamped recycling service is celebrating an incredible first year after collecting nearly 3,400 tonnes of recyclable materials.
Twelve months ago, the borough council launched a new service collecting five materials at the kerbside for 96 per cent of householders. In that time Copeland residents have recycled materials weighing roughly the same as 650 elephants!
Crews have emptied a staggering 1.5 million recycling containers, and a grand total of 3,354 tonnes have been collected. This compares to 1,589 tonnes over the previous year - a 53 per cent increase.

FOUR-YEAR-OLD Riley McCourt of Mirehouse is such a fan of bins and recycling that he asked for his own wheelie bin for his birthday.
Riley visited the waste collection crew at Copeland Council's Moresby depot after they heard of his obsession with the industry.
He enjoyed chatting with the team, got to do some recycling and took a seat in some of the council's waste and recycling vehicles with dad Anthony.
Riley has his own high-visibility jacket and regularly collects litter near his home, putting it into his wheelie bin and placing it out for collection.
Dog walkers hit with fines

THREE dog-walkers have been hit with fines after failing to clear up after their pets in Whitehaven.
Two were caught by Copeland Council’s Enforcement team in the North Shore area, and a third in the vicinity of The Beacon Museum. All three were issued with £80 fixed penalty notices for the offence.
Janice Carrol, Copeland Council’s Community Services Manager, said: “These examples should act as a deterrent for anyone who does not respect the beautiful borough in which we live. We have a zero tolerance approach to dog-fouling.
