Events to be held to mark Remembrance Sunday

EVENTS will take place around Copeland to mark Remembrance Sunday (November 10).

Whitehaven

From 10am, the parade will assemble outside Copeland Council’s offices, on Catherine Street. The parade to the cenotaph in Castle Park begins at 10.40am, where a service and wreath-laying takes place at 10.55am.

The parade will then proceed via Lowther Street, King Street and Market Place for a Service of Remembrance in the United Reformed Church at 11.30am.

Building control team awarded quality mark

Copeland Borough Council’s building control team have been awarded an internationally recognised quality mark.

The team have received ISO 9001:2015 certification which is an accredited standard of managing business processes.

The high performing team has held Chartered Building Consultancy status, via the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), for more than 10 years, something only a few building control services in the UK have achieved.

Copeland staff help pupils with challenge

COPELAND Council staff are supporting school pupils in a science and technology challenge.

The FIRST LEGO League competition asks groups of children to develop innovative solutions to problems using science and engineering. The annual global contest is co-ordinated in Cumbria by CSTEM (Cumbria Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and supported in West Cumbria by the REACT Foundation charity.

This year's theme is the built environment and planners at Copeland were asked to provide real-life challenges for the teams to solve.

Council supports new service for over-55s

COPELAND Council is supporting a new service for the over-55s.

The Copeland Age and Advice Service (CAAS) is a Community Interest Company set up to offer guidance around financial issues, applying for grants, housing, benefits and other issues to support independent living.

It also offers advice on blue badges, benefits checks and Lasting Power of Attorney applications.

Garden waste collections reach end of season

IT'S TIME for a last garden tidy - Copeland Council's green waste collection service concludes for the year on Friday November 15.

The collections will restart on March 16 2020.

Coun Steven Morgan, portfolio holder for Waste, said: "A couple of years ago we moved the garden waste collections further into autumn, after residents told us they needed to collect leaves and clippings until November.

"This has been well-received and people can plan a final cut or tidy now before the collections conclude for the year on November 15."
