Free festive parking on offer

COPELAND Council is offering free parking this festive period.
Nine of the car parks that the council runs will be free to use from Monday, December 23 to Wednesday, January 1 (inclusive).
Included in the offer is School House Lane, Senhouse Street, Whitehaven Sports Centre, The Ginns, The Beacon Museum and North Shore (all Whitehaven), Chapel Street and Beck Green (Egremont) and St Bees Foreshore.
A tenth car park – the Copeland Centre – will be free to use from December 25 to January 1 (inclusive)
Victims urged to come forward this Christmas

AS domestic abuse rates soar in December, victims are being encouraged to put an end to their suffering.
Domestic abuse incidents almost treble over the Christmas period, with 105 domestic abuse incidents reported in Copeland, in December 2018, 43 of these cases involved repeat victims.
Copeland Council introduced a specialist role to support victims of domestic abuse and sexual exploitation in 2018. Its officer has provided vital help to 81 women and men, and 85 children who were all homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Help for the homeless over the festive period

COPELAND residents who are at risk of becoming homeless over the Christmas period are urged to contact Copeland Council.
Early intervention is key for those at risk of homelessness with council staff able to provide the help and support needed to prevent residents becoming homeless.
Christmas arrangements

COPELAND Borough Council offices (including Market Hall and Millom) will be closed from 1pm on Tuesday, December 24. Its offices will also close at 3.30pm on Friday, December 20 (Millom will close at 3pm).
The Market Hall and Millom offices will reopen at 9am on Thursday, January 2.
Distington Hall Crematorium office will close at 1pm on December 24 and will reopen on December 27, and will close again for one day on January 1. The Chapel of Remembrance is open from 9am until 4.15pm every day throughout the Christmas period and is open until 4.30pm on Christmas Eve.
New roles to boost health through community

COPELAND Council has created two new roles to help community groups grow and improve people's health and wellbeing.
The officers will work with communities and existing groups to help them become stronger, set up new activities, engage with residents or recruit more volunteers. This will dovetail with NHS workers and other professionals who will help people access those services as part of a “social prescription.”
Copeland ready for a recycling Christmas

Copeland is ready to recycle this festive season!
This Christmas is the second since the council launched its new recycling service and it’s hoped residents will now be finding it second nature.
Janice Carrol, Copeland’s Community Services Manager, said: “Most Copeland residents are now recycling and it’s a great time of year to make the most of our kerbside collections of card, plastic, metal, paper and glass.
“Even well before the festivities start, we know people will have cardboard boxes as their online Christmas shopping starts to arrive.
