Businesses 'raise the bar' at prestigious awards

LICENSED premises across Cumbria have ‘raised the bar’ at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Representatives from 17 organisations in the Best Bar None accreditation scheme were praised for their contributions to improved safety and standards in the local industry at the gathering held yesterday (Wednesday).
The big winners on the day were Whitehaven Civic Hall and Walkabout, in Carlisle, who received the ‘Best in West Cumbria’ and ‘Best in North Cumbria’ awards respectively.

COPELAND Council has launched a consultation into next year’s budget – and wants to hear the public’s views.
The council is prioritising the delivery of its statutory commitments while increasingly using income and grants to run its discretionary services.
As part of a number of questions included in the consultation document, launched today (Wednesday), residents are being asked what they think the council’s priorities should be in terms of town centres, coastal areas and open spaces.
Safety checks under way at Copeland's cemeteries

A ROLLING programme of inspection and maintenance of Copeland’s burial grounds and cemeteries is under way.
Copeland Council staff are inspecting headstones in all 17 of its open and closed cemeteries to ensure they are stable and pose no risk to the public and colleagues who work there.
The council's inspections across all its sites will now run on a continuous basis which ensures that every headstone is checked at least every five years, as per Ministry of Justice guidance, with more regular inspections implemented in areas that require them.
