Lottery boss visits Whitehaven

THE BEACON Museum was delighted to welcome Nathan Lee, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund North West on Friday (12 May).

Mr Lee and his colleague Maya Sharma, Development Officer, visited the Beacon Museum and took the opportunity to look around the new conference centre currently under construction which will be named the ‘Beacon Portal.’

The Portal will provide meeting and event space to hire to complement the Museum facilities as well as housing many of the group sessions and learning activities which the Beacon Museum currently deliver for local school groups and more.

All change for disabled swimmers

A BRAND new disabled changing area was opened to the public today at the Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre.

Mayor Mike Starkie cut the ribbon at the fantastic new facility in Hensingham, alongside Georgina Ternent, public health locality manager at Cumbria County Council.

The changing rooms, which cost around £60,000, have been funded by Copeland Borough Council and the County Council's Changing Places Fund. They offer unrivalled facilities for people with a whole range of disabilities and are available to visitors who may not even be using the pool or gym.

Local dinner lady sets out her stall

BUDDING baker and ex dinner lady Mandy Robinson has embarked on a new venture selling her home bakes at her local markets.

Mandy is enjoying her third week selling her school dinner-themed cakes at Whitehaven and Egremont Markets.

Mandy saw her dreams become a reality quickly when she made the initial enquiry to Copeland Borough Council and was standing selling her local produce at Whitehaven Market the very next week.

The Beacon shortlisted for prestigious award

THE Beacon museum has been shortlisted for a prestigious tourism award.

The Whitehaven harbourside attraction has been shortlisted in the 'Visitor Attraction of the Year' category in the Cumbria Tourism Awards.

The nomination comes on the back of a highly successful year for the museum, in which visitor numbers have increased by 24 per cent, with over 24,000 through its doors.

Elizabeth Kwasnik, museum manager, said: "We are delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist for these awards. Copeland should be proud of this museum and how it continues to move forward.

Copeland Council elects new chairman

COPELAND Council has appointed Alistair Norwood as its new chairman for 2017/18.

Councillor Norwood said he was “humbled” to take up the post, succeeding Peter Tyson, and his charity for the year is the Stoke Unit at the West Cumberland Hospital.

"It's a proud day for me and it is a true honour to be given this job," said Councillor Norwood.

"Peter Tyson has set a high standard, of being fair and impartial, that I can only aspire to. I intend to represent this borough to the very best of my ability."

Former mayor Ossy Coyles memory will be honoured

A RESPECTED and loved former mayor of Copeland will be honoured by the renaming of a council chamber in his memory.

 

Oswald Coyles – known as Ossy – twice held the post of Copeland’s mayor during a 30-year career on the council.  And Copeland councillors yesterday voted unanimously to rename their chamber in the Copeland Centre after him.

 

Mr Coyles was an original member when Copeland Council formed in 1973, and was appointed honorary alderman of the borough in 2003.

 

Gary McKee to be awarded Freedom of Copeland

MARATHON man Gary McKee is to be awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Copeland.

Mr McKee, who has raised over £300,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, will receive the rare accolade – the highest a local authority can bestow – at a civic ceremony after the proposal was agreed by Copeland councillors this week.

In proposing that Mr McKee, of Cleator Moor, becomes a Freeman of Copeland as a ‘person of distinction’, mayor Mike Starkie said that his recent achievement of running 100 marathons in 100 days was “remarkable”.

Copeland tackles obesity

COPELAND Council has pledged to play its part in tackling obesity.
The authority has signed up to the Cumbria-wide Healthy Weight Declaration, promising to work together to support initiatives to promote healthy weight.

In agreement with the other members of the Cumbria Public Health Alliance, the council has signed up to four areas for action:
