Top marks for Millom eateries

MILLOM eateries are among the most hygienic in Copeland, current ratings reveal.

Almost 97 per cent of premises in the town have achieved the highest national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme of five (very good), four (good) or three (satisfactory) following inspections carried out by Copeland Council’s Environmental Health team.

There are 64 food establishments registered in Millom that are subject to inspection, including pubs, restaurants, cafes, bakeries, greengrocers and schools.

Inspectors examine how well managed and hygienic food preparation and storage areas are.

Waste teams issue vehicles plea

COPELAND residents are being asked to keep their roads clear of parked vehicles on bin collection days.

Copeland Council has issued the plea to householders after its waste team was forced to miss almost 200 collections over two months due to the arrangement of cars parked on the road.

The council will always try to come back a second time when access has not been possible, but often the teams are still unable to get to the bins.

Clean up campaign for Copeland's Beaches

COPELAND’S beaches will benefit from a summer-long clean-up scheme.

Two seasonal cleaners have been taken on by Copeland Council to focus exclusively on the borough’s four amenity beaches.

Paul Barnes has responsibility for Haverigg and Silecroft and Neil Davidson for Seascale and St Bees. Their litter-picking role also extends into the areas of the villages themselves that border the beaches.

Science Extravaganza at The Beacon Museum

A SCIENTIFIC extravaganza was held at The Beacon Museum today (Wednesday).

Over 80 children from local schools, Distington Community and Seascale Primary attended the event at the Whitehaven museum alongside Prism Arts Studio Theatre Members.

Atomic Day launched a two-year Heritage Lottery Funded project, entitled ‘Cumbria’s Atomic Story – a Fusion of People and Place.’

The project is led by Prism Arts and supported by heritage partner The Beacon Museum, Sellafield Ltd and National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL).

Copeland Big Switch could boost economy

COPELAND residents are being offered an average saving of £148 through the borough's latest energy buying scheme - and research shows these savings will go back into the local economy.

The second round of the Copeland Big Switch has just closed and research reveals 63 per cent of energy switchers say they would spend the savings locally.

Copeland Council has been offering  residents a collective energy switching scheme for around six months. It uses group buying power to get the best price from energy suppliers who compete for the business.
