Copeland continues grants to parish councils

COPELAND Council is to continue funding parish councils despite extreme cuts to its budget.

The council’s executive committee decided to continue the £67,000 funding for 2015/16.

The council had the option to reduce the grant by 30 per cent - the same percentage as the council’s grant from central government has been cut - to assist with budget savings of £1.65m. However councillors made the decision to continue the funding for 2015/16.

COPELAND Borough Council has today (13January) begun a ten week consultation period for residents of Copeland to have their say on the proposed Site Allocations and Policies Plan.

The plan identifies sites that will ensure sufficient land is available to meet the anticipated growth of the borough over the next 15 years. It highlights land which will form the borough’s development land portfolio, including proposed land allocation for 4000 new homes:

Local firms asked to bid for heritage projects

COPELAND Council is inviting local builders to get involved with the work around its Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).

The Council is keen that local firms should have all the skills necessary to bid for projects awarded under the THI grant scheme. These grants are to restore buildings in the Market Place and James Street area of Whitehaven, and often involve specialist heritage construction techniques.

US Navy Attaché to visit Beacon Museum

THE Beacon Museum will welcome US Navy Defence Attaché, Captain David Strachner as part of the annual John Paul Jones commemoration on Wednesday, February 11. Mayor of Copeland, Cllr Eileen Eastwood and Honorary Consul to the US Navy in Whitehaven, Rob Romano will join the party to see the museums displays relating to the town’s Anglo-American links, as well as the John Paul Jones stories.
