Jobseekers learn of careers in the great outdoors

TWELVE unemployed people from Copeland now have a better understanding of working in the great outdoors thanks to a programme delivered through the Copeland Work and Skills Partnership.
The course, which looked at a range of career opportunities in the natural environment, was supported by West Lakes Adventure, West Cumbria Rivers Trust and the Lake District National Park. The programme was delivered over four weeks during June.
Whitehaven to host second youth market

TWENTY young entrepreneurs will be setting out their stall at Whitehaven’s youth market on Saturday.
Copeland Council’s second Young Entrepreneurs Market will be held on King Street and follows the success of the launch market in June.
The market – open between 10am and 3pm – will see the number of young stallholders almost double from the first instalment, and the introduction of a local storyteller Debbie Haine at the Duke Street end of King Street, with four talented young singers performing in the Market Place at the other end.
Council offers homelessness support

COPELAND Council helped house 135 homeless individuals or families in the borough in the last year, new figures reveal.
A total of 449 people sought the council’s advice on housing and homelessness matters in 2020/21, and of the 135 who needed to be re-housed in the past 12 months, 103 have now moved into long-term accommodation.
The Housing and Homeless team works every day with individuals, families, support agencies and landlords to prevent people from having to leave their homes, and helps to find alternative accommodation for those that do have to leave.
Community full of praise for council

COPELAND Council received almost twice as many compliments from residents in 2020/21 as it did in the previous year.
The council formally recorded 106 compliments in the past year, new figures show, compared to 62 over the previous 12-month period.
