Congratulations are in order for our Sustainability Team, which has been awarded ‘Sustainability Innovator of the Year’ in the BECBC Shadow Board Awards.

The team has been recognised for promoting sustainable practices within the borough through the Copeland People’s Panel on Climate Change, delivered as part of the Zero Carbon Cumbria Programme.

This programme has been made possible thanks to a £2.5 million grant from the National Lottery Climate Action Fund, which is supporting a Cumbria-wide programme of community-led action on climate change

Copeland boasts safe swimming waters

Published: 26/01/2022

COPELAND'S coastline has been recognised for its safe, clean swimming water once again.

St Bees and Silecroft both received an ‘excellent’ water quality rating, which is the highest possible, and Seascale and Haverigg’s waters were both deemed ‘good’.

These findings help to reassure both locals and visitors that swimming and other water sports in Copeland’s coastal waters will be safe and enjoyable.

The bathing water classifications are based on monitoring data collected by the Environment Agency in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021.

New CCTV and lighting in Castle Park

Published: 25/01/2022

WORK to install new lighting and surveillance has started in Whitehaven’s Castle Park to help Copeland residents feel safer.

The Home Office’s Safer Streets Fund has granted £190k to Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall. Some of this is being used by Copeland Borough Council to light the paths within the park and install CCTV cameras.

Increased surveillance should deter the anti-social behaviour that has become a common occurrence in the park.
