We offer you the opportunity to commemorate a loved one by dedicating a bench in their memory at our cemeteries or at Distington Hall Crematorium.

We offer one type of bench. The bench is approximately 1800mm (5feet 9inches) in length and includes a back rail where a plaque can be inserted. (see application form for a picture of the bench).

In addition to the memorial bench, we can supply a plaque (see application form for an example plaque).

The standard size of the plaque is 63 x 152mm made of Stainless Steel, flush mounted into the back rail.

We have five cemeteries which are located in Whitehaven (adjacent to the St Bees Road), Hensingham, Beckermet, Netherwasdale and Millom. All are cemeteries are open to the public.

On this page we hope to help you through this difficult time by giving you all the information you need when you have suffered a bereavement.  This includes registering a death, making funeral arrangements, types of funeral service, legal advice, wills and financial advice.

If you think either your rateable value or rating list entry is incorrect, you can make an appeal asking for it to be changed.

As well as the rate payer, the following people may also make an appeal :

As part of our role in the administration of non domestic rates, commonly referred to as Business Rates, we have several areas where we can exercise our discretion to provide reductions to the amounts of business rates that are due to be paid.

The principal consideration when making an award is that any relief granted is in the best interests of the residents and taxpayers of Copeland and produces a local benefit.

Non domestic rates

Non domestic rates - often referred to as business rates - are charged on most non-domestic properties (including commercial ones) such as shops, offices, pubs, warehouses and factories. If you use a building or part of a building for non-domestic purposes, you will probably have to pay business rates.

Click here to view Copeland Council's current Council Tax and Business Rates booklet which includes explanatory notes for business rates.
