Copeland Development Plan

Development Planning is a vital tool in helping us and the community respond to the challenges that lie ahead for Copeland.  It can help us to prepare the land, the places, the infrastructure and the services that will be needed, and it can set out the basis for making choices about new development.  

This page sets out the statutory planning documents which make up the current Development Plan. Planning applications must be determined in accordance with the Development Plan unless other material considerations indicate otherwise. The current Development Plan comprises the Core Strategy and Development Management Policies DPD (Adopted in December 2013) and a number of policies “saved” from the Copeland Local Plan 2001-2016. These documents are considered further below.

We are in the process of producing a new Local Plan which will replace the Core Strategy and saved policies. The emerging Local Plan is considered further below.

Caring homes for strays

COPELAND Council is continuing its good work with a local kennels to rehome stray dogs.

The authority has, in the last year, managed to return or rehome all but one of the 133 stray dogs rescued by its officers. Of the remainder, 64 dogs were reunited with their owners and 68 were found new homes.

Copeland works with Whinmill Kennels in Harrington to ensure strays are taken to a caring environment and then kept until a home can be found for them. Only in the most extreme circumstances is a dog put to sleep.

Candidates quizzed at Youth Question Time

In a bid to get more young people engaged in democracy, Copeland Borough Council and Copeland Youth Forums teamed up with UCLan and the Samuel Lindow Foundation to hold the first Copeland Mayoral Election Youth Question Time event.

Over 20 young people from across the borough attended the debate between mayoral candidates on Friday, getting the chance to get involved and put their questions to the candidates directly.
