Councillor Charles Maudling elected new Chair

COPELAND Council has elected Councillor Charles Maudling as its new Chair for 2020/21.

Councillor Maudling was elected unanimously to the position at the council’s Annual General Meeting today (Thursday), and succeeds Councillor Joan Hully.

Councillor Maudling has served on Copeland Council since 2015; originally representing Harbour ward, and following a boundary review in 2019, now representing Whitehaven Central ward.

Felicity Wilson, Millom ward, will serve as Deputy Chair.

200 people supported to leave abusive homes

COPELAND Council has supported 200 men, women and children to leave abusive homes, over the last two years.

The Council introduced a specialist role to support victims of domestic abuse and sexual exploitation in 2018. So far, its officer has provided vital help to 102 men and women, and 98 children who had nowhere safe to stay.

So far, during the pandemic, the Council’s Housing team has offered advice and assistance to eight sufferers and provided safe accommodation for two of these victims, and is urging more people to come forward.

Outdoor gym and teen-shelter in the pipe-line

PUPILS from Valley Primary School have submitted ambitious plans to install an outdoor community gym and teen-shelter in the area.

The bid is currently being considered by Well Whitehaven, an initiative designed to improve the lives of those living in the Mirehouse and Corkickle communities.

The plans have been months in the making, with Well Whitehaven representatives working closely with the school to consult the local community, liaise with suppliers, speak to land owners and create bids needed to fund part of the project.

Copeland Council's bank holiday arrangements

COPELAND Council has the made the following arrangements for the coming bank holiday (Monday, May 25).

All household waste, recycling and garden waste collections will be one day later next week.

Residents can find out when their next collection will be at www.copeland.gov.uk.

Gold status for excellence in data management

COPELAND Council has won a Gold Award for excellence in management of address information.

The Council has been awarded the gold standard in recognition of the way it manages its address information database.

The accolade was presented at the virtual GeoPlace Exemplar Awards 2020 on April 29.

The Gold Award is only given to authorities that have consistently reached and maintained the highest standards in national tests on data excellence, supplying regular updates to the national street data hub.

Council unveils vision for Whitehaven

COPELAND Council has unveiled its ambitious vision for Whitehaven in a multi-million-pound regeneration scheme.

The council has developed a scheme totalling approximately £25m, and will next month submit its bid to the Government’s Future High Streets Fund for around £15m to help deliver it.
