Grant helps residents get back on track

COPELAND Council has extended funding to a credit union to help those in need get back on an even keel.

The council has a long-standing funding agreement with the Whitehaven, Egremont and District Credit Union, helping families and individuals access grants when they are experiencing hardship.

Because of the pandemic and the extra financial pressure it has caused for some residents, the council has extended this funding by £20,000.

Copeland Council bank holiday arrangements

COPELAND Council has the made the following arrangements for the coming bank holidays (Friday, April 2 and Monday, April 5).

All household waste, recycling and garden waste collections will be as normal on Friday, April 2.

Collections will then take place one day later than normal in the week beginning Monday, April 5 (including a Saturday collection for those who would ordinarily be collected on Friday, April 9).

Residents can find out when their next collection will be at www.copeland.gov.uk.   

Innovative e-scooter trial launched in Whitehaven

AN innovative e-scooter trial has been launched in Copeland – and members of the public can now take part.

E-scooters are available for hire from today from their base at Westlakes Science Park and various locations around Whitehaven, with rental times ranging from 20 minutes to 24 hours.

Rental costs start at £2 for the first 20 minutes, and the Segway MAX models can move at up to 11mph with their use permitted on public highways in and around Whitehaven and some surrounding areas, including Westlakes Science Park.

New app celebrates Millom and Nicholson

A NEW walking app inspired by the work of a Millom poet could bring culture-hungry visitors to the 'hidden gem' of a town.

The Norman Nicholson digital trail will take in routes that the poet himself would regularly walk.

The trails - there are currently two, with three more in the pipeline - are not just about Nicholson, and can be enjoyed by general visitors of all ages. It is hoped that people will enjoy the app in line with any current Covid-related restrictions.

Restart grants for Copeland businesses

BUSINESSES in Copeland will receive one-off payments of up to £18,000 to reopen safely as Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

Grants of up to £18,000 will be paid to businesses in the hospitality, leisure, personal care and accommodation sectors.

Grants of up to £6,000 will be paid to non-essential retail businesses.

Payments for the Restart grant scheme will be made after April 1, 2021.
