National Food Hygiene Rating System

You can find out if a shop or restaurant has good hygiene standards through the National Food Hygiene Rating System.

This is a national scheme run in partnership with the Food Standards Agency. It ensures that businesses across Copeland and the rest of Cumbria are offering the same standards of food hygiene as other parts of the country.

Our team regulates all food businesses within the borough. We inspect food businesses on an unannounced, regular basis to ensure food business operators are complying with current food safety legislation.

Under the scheme, each food business is given a food hygiene rating on a scale from 0 to 5. The top rating is ‘5’ – which means the hygiene standards are very good. The bottom is ‘0’ – which indicates urgent improvement is required.

Please look out for the stickers and certificates on display, and we publish all inspection results on social media.
