Residents swap 14,500 bins of waste for recycling

Published: 20/08/2018

COPELAND'S new recycling scheme has prompted a huge reduction in the amount of 'residual' waste - that's the non-recycled waste that residents put into their black wheeled bin.

During the first quarter of 2017/18 (April, May and June) 4,483 tonnes of residual waste were sent for processing. In the same period this year, just 4,221 tonnes were collected. That's an impressive reduction of 262 tonnes, or 14,556 average wheelie bins full!

Fines issued for fly-tipping and dog-fouling

Published: 10/08/2018

TWO Whitehaven residents have been hit with fines after failing to clear up after their dogs.

The two women were caught by Copeland Council’s Enforcement team this week; one in Castle Park and the other on Scotch Street, both in Whitehaven town centre. Both were issued with £80 fixed penalty notices for the offence.

The team has also imposed a £250 fixed penalty notice on a Whitehaven man who was caught fly-tipping. Council workers were led to the offender after finding evidence in bags of domestic rubbish which had been dumped on Coates Lane, Whitehaven.

Copeland recyclers reach milestone

Published: 10/08/2018

COPELAND Council has collected the 1,000th tonne of recycling under its new kerbside scheme – that’s the equivalent of 100 double-decker buses.

It’s taken just over three months to reach the milestone – previously it would have taken around eight months to collect that amount of material.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “It’s great that we’ve reached this stage so quickly. People are embracing the scheme and making sure their materials are clean and sorted, so we really want to thank and congratulate them on reaching this milestone."

Clean up for the streets of Copeland

Published: 08/08/2018

TWO new Pride of Place team members have been employed to clean up the streets of Copeland.

Copeland Borough Council has employed Malcolm Litt and Greg Smith to undertake various duties such as litter picking, weeding, emptying bins and general cleaning of the borough’s towns and villages.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, launched the Copeland Pride of Place campaign in January 2018 to highlight everything that is positive in the borough and to shine a light on those individuals who disrespect our communities through vandalism, fly-tipping, dog fouling and littering.
