West Cumbria Retail, Town Centres and Leisure Study
Allerdale and Copeland Council jointly commissioned a Retail, Town Centres and Leisure Study for the West Cumbria region in January 2020. One of the key purposes of the Study is to act as the evidence base to assist in the formulation of future development plan policy and land use allocations, as well as providing baseline information to assist in the determination of planning applications for retail and leisure development.

Protecting and enhancing the special character of the landscape that contributes towards local identity and distinctiveness is an important part of the planning process and essential to quality of life. Landscape character assessment is a useful tool in identifying the special qualities that give a landscape its sense of place. Recognised by Government and promoted by Natural England, it can aid the planning, design and management of a landscape.
