Information on services provided by our Parks & Open Spaces team, including grass and hedge cutting, shrub bed maintenance, play areas and care of open amenity spaces.

What we maintain

Our Parks & Open Spaces team maintains 354 hectares of council owned land.  This includes two public parks, 14 play areas, five open cemeteries, 12 churchyards and over 200 hectares of woodland.  Our open spaces cover 25 per cent of our major towns and are highly valued by our communities.

Maintenance regimes vary according to how often it is needed and the type of site it is.  These range from regularly mown amenity areas like Castle Park to semi-natural habitats such as woodlands, wetlands and flower-rich grasslands. These latter sites have a higher value for wildlife.

Below is a list of the services we provide:

Grass cutting

The grass cutting season usually runs from March/April through to October/November.

We cut our grass areas across the borough at various frequencies, depending on how often it is needed and the type of site it is.  In many locations we have changed our grass cutting regimes to leave more grass longer for wildlife and to allow wild flowers to grow.

Soft and wet ground conditions will sometimes make it difficult or even dangerous to operate mowing machines, and can lead to delays in grass cutting schedules.

Play area maintenance

We regularly inspect and maintain 14 playground facilities in open spaces, including skate parks and multi-use games areas within Copeland.

Commercial grounds maintenance contracts

We provide contracted grounds maintenance services to a wide range of customers including parish and town councils, schools, sports clubs, churches and other private land and gardens.

Street scene maintenance

Maintaining street scene assets, including bus shelters, street furniture, and street name plates owned by the council.

Footway lighting

We maintain a small stock of footway lighting on car parks, footpaths and small mostly rural pockets of land.

Please note that street lighting is mostly maintained by Cumbria County Council.

Allotments

We manage Brisco Mount allotment site at Egremont. All other allotment sites within Copeland are managed by various town councils or associations.

Bereavement Services

Our team manages over 1,000 cremations each year at Distington Hall crematorium and provides a burial service at five open cemeteries: Whitehaven, Hensingham, Beckermet, Nether Wasdale and Millom.

The team maintains the facilities and grounds of Distington Hall Crematorium, including the gardens and chapel of remembrance.

Further information on Bereavement Services can be found here.

Tree works

We maintain the council’s tree stock including woodlands and specimen amenity trees on Council owned land. Our current work programme operates outside the bird nesting season (November to February) and is prioritised to ensure that our limited resource is focussed to where it is needed most.

We do offer a tree service and can provide free estimates for works.

Please contact our Planning team on 01946 598421 or devcontrol@copeland.gov.uk to request permission to carry out tree works in conservation areas or on trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).
