Planning Policy Introduction

The Planning Policy Team are responsible for producing local land use policies, allocations and guidance that are used in deciding planning applications and therefore guide future development in the Copeland Borough.

Planning Policy is contained in a number of statutory planning documents:

National Planning Policy

National Planning Policy - The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) - The National Planning Policy Framework was published on 27 March 2012 and sets out the Government's planning policies for England and how these are expected to be applied.  The NPPF is accompanied by Planning Practice Guidance.

Local Planning Policy

Local Planning Policy - The Planning Policy Team are responsible for the production of the Copeland Local Plan and other key planning documents which are the basis for judging planning applications.

Neighbourhood Plans

Neighbourhood Plans - The Localism Act (2011) introduced a new form of Plan, which gives communities the power to develop Neighbourhood Plans that, once adopted for their area, will become part of the planning framework for their area. 

Lake District National Park Local Plan

Lake District National Park Local Plan - The Lake District National Park Authority are the Local Planning Authority for the Lake District National Park and produce their own Local Plan which can be viewed on their website.

Cumbria Minerals and Waste Local Plan

Cumbria Minerals and Waste Local Plan - Cumbria County Council is the Planning Authority for minerals and waste planning development in the County.
