If you want to find out if a shop or restaurant has good hygiene standards check out

This is a national scheme run in partnership with the Food Standards Agency. The new food hygiene scheme ensures that businesses across Copeland and the rest of Cumbria are offering the same standards of food hygiene as other parts of the country.

Our team regulates all food businesses within the borough. We inspect food businesses on an unannounced, regular basis to ensure food business operators are complying with current food safety legislation. We post the findings on

Under the scheme each food business is given a food hygiene rating on a scale from 0 to 5. The top rating is ‘5’ – which means the hygiene standards are very good. The bottom is ‘0’ – which indicates urgent improvement is required. In Copeland we are well-served with top rated restaurants and shops. Under the new scheme, Copeland has more businesses rated ‘5’ than ‘0’ to ‘4’rated businesses combined.

By using the ratings system you can be reassured that your chosen shop or restaurant is performing well. Look out for the stickers and certificates on display, and we publish all inspection results on social media.
