Charitable relief for business rates

Registered Charities are eligible for relief from the rates on any non-domestic property that is wholly or mainly used for charitable purposes.

Mandatory Charitable Relief

Charities and community amateur sports clubs can apply for relief of up to 80% if the property is used for charitable purposes.

If you wish to apply for Charitable relief as a Registered Charity please contact the Business Rates Section in writing quoting your Charity Commission registration number.

Discretionary Charitable Relief

Other not-for-profit organisations can also benefit.

If you are a Non Profit Making Organisation and wish to apply for relief please download and complete the application form, and send it with the documentation requested to the Business Rates Section at the Copeland Centre, Catherine Street, Whitehaven, CA28 7SJ.

Your application will be assessed against the criteria listed below and you will be advised in writing if you have been successful, and of the amount of relief you have been awarded.

The criteria

Your organisation must

  •  meet the objectives of the Council’s Corporate Plan;
  •  be accessible to the disabled;
  • have a local membership with affordable fees;
  • demonstrate a need for funding;
