Whitehaven’s winter wonderland

Published: 21/12/2022

CHILDREN from Copeland enjoyed a warm meal and gifts from Santa today (Wednesday) at a Winter Wonderland event.

More than 70 children, and their families, were treated to gifts bought by Copeland Borough Council staff, supported by a donation of £500 from Coombe & Sharpe.

The families that attended the event in the United Reformed Church, Whitehaven, enjoyed Christmas crafts and a meal cooked by volunteers.

Families also received a hamper from Copeland Community Fund filled with festive treats. Some guests also received a fruit and vegetable hamper, and a meat voucher.

The event was run in partnership with Sellafield Ltd, Family Action, Copeland Community Fund, Morgan Sindall Group and Rosehill.

One parent said: “We’re so thankful to have somewhere we can all come and celebrate Christmas.

“We’re on our own, without any family support, and all three kids have been excited about coming today.

“We’ve enjoyed the warm soup and Christmas crafts. Events like these really bring the community together.”

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “I’d like to thank my incredibly kind colleagues who provided presents for children in need this Christmas, and Coombe & Sharpe for the generous donation.

“I’d also like to extend my sincerest gratitude to those that volunteered, and our partners who helped make today possible.

“It was a fantastic event, enjoyed by everyone who attended.”
