Green change for garden bins

Published: 23/06/2021

COPELAND residents awaiting a new garden waste bin will notice a difference when it is delivered – new bins will now be green instead of brown.

Copeland Council is keen to let residents know that this does not signify any change in the service, and is simply down to a supply issue.

Copeland's Portfolio Holder for Recycling and Waste, Coun Steven Morgan, said: “Our order for new garden bins was being delayed by a shortage of the brown polymer used to make them. Green bins, on the other hand, were more readily available.

“We decided to take that option as it meant we could get on with delivering the bins – a backlog has built up over lockdown and people have been very patient whilst we’ve been trying to catch up.

“We have now been able to commission some extra resources for this task, and deliveries of new bins should speed up over the coming weeks. If you are on our waiting list, please be patient a little longer and wait a few weeks rather than contact us again now – we are currently working hard to get all the ordered bins to their new homes.”

Residents’ existing brown bins will remain in use, and will be collected in exactly the same way. They will not be replaced with green bins until each brown bin reaches the end of its useful life.

Residents can check when their garden, household waste and recycling collections are at www.copeland.gov.uk.
