Training gives unemployed a head start

Published: 07/04/2021

UNEMPLOYED Copeland residents are being offered training to give them a head start in the hospitality and tourism sector.

The Copeland Work and Skills Partnership, led by Copeland Borough Council, is offering the Welcome Host Gold course.

The one-day course trains people in customer services, and is considered the 'gold standard' in the industry.

Chris Pickles, Copeland's Work and Skills Programme Officer, said: "The course covers the core skills needed to deliver excellent customer service in an ever-changing industry that is currently growing in Copeland."

Participants learn to:
*develop communication skills
*recognise customer expectations and how to meet them
*understand their frontline sales and service role
*tackle difficult situations
*embrace the importance of teamwork

Mr Pickles added: "The timing of the course is crucial - the industry is preparing for its post-Covid recovery and will need qualified staff across the borough."

As well as unemployed individuals, the partnership would like to hear from employers in the hospitality sector who are looking to recruit and want to train staff before they start work.

Mr Pickles said: “Welcome Host Gold is for front facing staff in the tourism, hospitality, leisure, travel and transport sectors. It explains what it means to be an ambassador for your business and the place you live, work and enjoy.

"The course gives the skills and knowledge needed to deliver excellent customer service in a fast-paced industry. It’s a life skill that is transferable throughout someone's career.”

The programme is the latest in a series of bespoke support opportunities arranged by the Copeland Work and Skills Partnership, which is funded by Copeland Community Fund and Sellafield Ltd
